Apple CEO Tim Cook ousted as Gil Amelio takes the helm as new Chief

The Apple board, meeting behind closed doors Sunday night, voted to oust Tim Cook as CEO. In his place, former Apple CEO Gil Amelio was voted in as interim lifetime CEO. “I am so glad to be back at the helm of this ship that is Apple,” Amelio proclaimed. “We’ll be placing this ship in dry dock and reinventing its wheels.” The board had no comment on its decision, only to issue the formal written statement that it has nothing to do with the recent Papal visit to Cupertino. Management Shake-up  Amelio went on to further state that, “Cook will maintain an advisory position with Apple with the new title as Captain.”  The Captain could not be reached for immediate comment as he was preparing Amelio’s French-pressed coffee with cream and sugar. However, an intern reported that Cook had already been severely reprimanded. Apparently Cook returned it with Sweet and Low and not Splenda. To which Amelio told Cook, very Kevin Spacingly; “If you can’t follow  simple instructions, how can you be trusted with smaller decisions?” Sweeping Product Line Shift                         Extending the nautical metaphor Amelio announced a sweeping shift in its pursuit of dominating the underlying digital technology and circumnavigating back to the company’s analog roots.  Gill was heard saying;  “We started with analog, right?” iTunes Store shelved in favor of the iBrick and iMotor Store  To this end, Gil announced plans to shut down the iTunes Store. “As soon as we finish selling out all the digital inventory in our warehouses, we’ll move to our new franchised line of iBrick and iMotor stores.” The new product line includes: i45’s analog disks i33’s analog laser disks i78’s floppy albums Apple Hangs up iPhone in favor of the iRotary Landlines  The next step to the conveyor chopping block holds the... Once Drop Outs, Now Commencement Speakers

Their stories are now the stuff of legend. Once drop outs, now they are the CEOs of companies that have changed the world. It is perhaps a bit ironic, therefore, that these individuals – Steve Jobs of Apple and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft – would one day return to academia to inspire a new flock of college graduates. Steve Jobs’ 2005 commencement address at Stanford and Steve Ballmer’s 2011 commencement address at USC show that despite the sometimes conflicting paths their respective companies take, the passion that drives these two individuals is largely the same. Both Jobs and Ballmer stressed the importance of following one’s passion. Jobs advised graduates to “find what you love.” Ballmer urged them to “find passion.” Jobs told his story of dropping out of college to start dropping into classes he liked. He relayed how he would sit into calligraphy classes out of sheer interest. Ten years later, when Apple was designing the first Macintosh computer, those calligraphy classes served as inspiration for multiple typefaces; today, this is a basic feature of any word processing software. Ballmer explained how his experience as the manager for his college football team led to the discovery of his passion for organizing. When Ballmer’s friend, Bill Gates, contacted Ballmer about joining Microsoft, Ballmer dropped out of his MBA program to apply his passion for organizing to the new company. The common thread in both stories was the discovery of one’s passion as a prerequisite for success. Retrospective of WWDC OSX Lion and the iCloud

With the recent WWDC finally wrapping up, we got a lot of new announcements from Apple. We were shown the new impressive features that are now built into Apple Mac OSX Lion. We were also introduced to a new service called the iCloud. The first major announcement was the developer version of Apple’s Mac OSX Lion. They were finally able to show all of the new features of the operating system. The new OS will support full-screen apps, Multi-Touch gestures, the Mac app store, and it will be optimized for the iCloud. Apple Mac OSX will also have Mission Control. Mission Control combines Expose, Dashboard, and your apps all into one program to allow for complete control over everything. The new operating system will also include Resume and Launchpad. However, the biggest new feature of Mac OSX Lion is the support for the Apple iCloud. The single biggest announcement from this year’s conference was the introduction of the Apple iCloud. The iCloud will redesign how we store and share data. The iCloud will save your apps, music, photos, documents, and anything else. Then it will push that data to all of your other devices. This is great for people who use multiple devices. It will also support using a PC to submit data to the cloud. The iCloud will also allow you to never worry about losing your music again. Once you purchase a song, the song is then saved to the cloud and pushed to all of your devices. Steve Jobs announced that they will be adding a new service called iTunes Match coming this fall. The Atavist – How Multimedia Should Be Done in Digital Magazines – NYTimes.com

This highlights the evolution of digital media. In some respects it reminds me of the evolution of the automobile. When first introduced were dubbed ‘Horseless Carriages’. This was a fitting description for the new technology until it took on an identity of its own. It remains to be seen just how the digital media will evolve. IPad Rivals Tablets Fail to Gain Customer Traction – NYTimes.com

Putting this into perspective with the introduction of the PC, puts these recent observations about the iPad in a keener light. Although IBM released the PC eclipsing the Apple II, and CPM machines IBM clones soon proliferated and overtook the sales of the original IBM. I recall that IBM thought they would only sell 50,000 PC in a niche market. Although they well surpassed their original estimates, indeed, they failed to entrench their customers and close their systems. Is Apple succeeding because of their closed system or in spite of it? Is their brand alone so strong that their reputation precedes their product releases and expectations? From the sound of it, it looks like the retail stores will soon be overstocked with obsolete iPad knock offs.
