IPad Rivals Tablets Fail to Gain Customer Traction – NYTimes.com

Putting this into perspective with the introduction of the PC, puts these recent observations about the iPad in a keener light. Although IBM released the PC eclipsing the Apple II, and CPM machines IBM clones soon proliferated and overtook the sales of the original IBM. I recall that IBM thought they would only sell 50,000 PC in a niche market. Although they well surpassed their original estimates, indeed, they failed to entrench their customers and close their systems.

Is Apple succeeding because of their closed system or in spite of it? Is their brand alone so strong that their reputation precedes their product releases and expectations? From the sound of it, it looks like the retail stores will soon be overstocked with obsolete iPad knock offs. The rivals may even be better off manufacturing accessories joining the ranks of the other consumer electronic firms such as Sony.
